It's Election Day in Louisiana - Go VOTE! Plus More Calls to Action for the Week Ahead
It's a busy season! HFL will keep you in the loop!
Shameless plug: Jill is running for Republican State Central Committee! Will you ask friends and family in the Ruston area to vote for Jill Hines today? Today is Election Day and polls are open till 8 pm! Plenty of time to get to the polls in your area too! Wherever you are, go vote!
Last week was a doozy! Jill was at the Supreme Court for the hearing on Murthy v Missouri, aka Missouri v Biden.
She had the chance to discuss the experience with Del Bigtree on this week’s The Highwire! You can watch that segment by clicking the photo below.
Two common sense bills were in committee and then went before the House for a floor vote this week. HB25 by Rep McCormick and HB87 by Rep Echols work in tandem to help prevent vaccine mandates, one by removing civil liability for those businesses that do not mandate covid vaccines and the other adds civil liability for those businesses that do mandate them for their employees or students. Rep Emily Chenevert attempted to add an amendment on HB25 so that all vaccines would be included, not just covid vaccines. Democrats went NUTS! Over and over they described scenarios in which they would sue for contracting an illness in a business. The bill was finally amended to include experimental vaccines or vaccines under EUA.
Then when it was Rep Echols’ turn on the hot seat, Democrats argued that his bill would harm businesses by creating a new tort situation. It was clearly manic and the takeaway is: Democrats want to be able to sue if they catch a virus on your property, but they do not want a covid vaccine injured employee to be able to sue their employer if a work required vaccine harmed them. HB87 failed to pass, meaning Republicans voted against it, as well, but Rep Echols took the opportunity to ensure it could be brought back for another vote. Edited to add: Echols’ bill had an amendment added by Rep Lauren Ventrella that changed the focus from covid vaccines to emergency use authorized vaccines. The fact that Republicans failed to pass this is egregious. While Rep Amy Freeman (D) still questions whether or not EUA means “experimental,” Republicans should know better.
Rep Echols and I were guests on Louisiana Watch with Rex Moncrief and Duke Lowrie on Thursday evening to discuss his bill and my trip to SCOTUS.
What is on the agenda this week so far…? (it is subject to change!)
Rep Beryl Amedee’s Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) bill will be heard in the House Commerce Committee on Monday, March 25th in Room 1 at 9:30 am. This legislation passed last year, but was vetoed by Edwards. You can send a statement to the committee in support of HB357 by hitting the button below. Remember, you are welcome to personalize the message to add your thoughts about CBDC.
Rep Kathy Edmonston is bringing back legislation to prohibit schools from requiring covid vaccination for school attendance. This legislation passed last year but was vetoed by Edwards. HB46 will be in the House Education Committee on Tuesday, March 26th in Room 1 at 9:00 am. You can send a statement to the committee by hitting the button below. As always, your personlized message is welcome.
Another bill vetoed by Edwards last year is Rep Edmonston’s legislation that would require schools to inform parents and students of the state’s vaccine exemption law, so she’s bringing it back for a third time!! Louisiana State School Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley recently ensured that this information will be added to Bulletin 741, a guidebook for every school in the state, for public and non-public schools — an excellent indicator that there will be no future impedent to this legislation. HB47 will also be in the House Education Committee on Tuesday, March 26th in Room 1 at 9:00 am. Send a statement to the committee by using the button below.
If you are able, please attend these hearings and submit a green card in support!
Be on the lookout for a substack tomorrow about SB133, Senator Thomas Pressly’s legislation restricting the authority of the World Health Organization in Louisiana. I had the opportunity recently to interview Valerie Borek, an expert on the WHO treaty amendments. We will send out the Call to Action on SB133 and the interview with Ms Borek in a separate article.
