Great News from BESE This Week!
State School Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley indicates "health freedom" is a priority.
We were thrilled to learn that an item on this week’s Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) meeting agenda indicates that health freedom is a priority of State School Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley. We share details in the video below regarding Tuesday’s meeting in Baton Rouge.
To recap, BESE members voted unanimously to update Bulletin 741, the handbook for both public and non-public schools, to require schools to provide parents with vaccine exemption information any time vaccine requirements are made known.
We see this as a positive and proactive move on the part of Dr. Brumley, who in the past has made sure that a BESE representative testified for legislation that would make this information available as a matter of law.
Last year, State Representative Kathy Edmonston introduced legislation that would have required schools to inform parents and students of their right to an exemption under current state law. The bill passed both chambers, including a unanimous vote by the House, only to be vetoed by Edwards. The Senate, under the leadership of President Page Cortez, failed to override Edwards’ veto. Rep. Edmonston has already filed the same legislation again this year and we are hoping it will pass again. But with Dr. Brumley’s suggested change to Bulletin 741 being approved by BESE, it ensures that there will be no lag in getting this information in front of school administrators so that the appropriate information can be provided to parents. The bulletin should be updated and go into effect in late July. We appreciate the comments from BESE members noting how this update was necessary for greater transparency and their positive support of this measure which passed without opposition.
Why is this change to Bulletin 741 and additional legislation needed?
Schools habitually deny parents information about their option to submit an exemption and make threats like the one in the text below from Ruston High School, where they state children will be excluded from school without proof of “immunization.” Of course, that is patently false since all parents have to do to opt out of any vaccine requirement is submit a “written dissent” per state law, RS 17:170E. We explain the law in detail on our website and we strongly encourage all parents to familiarize themselves with it so they are not deceived by schools.
We encourage parents and college students to always submit a written dissent, regardless of vaccination status. Why? Vaccine information is private medical information and has been used to discriminate against students. Knowing that all vaccines have some failure rate and will wane over time, a person’s vaccination record is no indication of a their immunity and should hold no value in schools or society. As we have seen over the last several years, vaccines have caused great harm to vast swaths of society and vaccination status has been used to degrade humans both in school and the workplace.
Parents, let us encourage you: always submit a written dissent.
Below is a sample form you can download and use to submit to your school.
