HB471 by Rep Barbara Frieberg is a very bad bill - let me tell you why.
Every vaccine insert has a warning or precaution regarding the necessity of having appropriate medical treatment available during administration and/or the importance of knowing the patient’s medical, family, and/or immunization history.
Are pharmacists going to perform an exam at the pharmacy and take the child’s temperature to make sure they don’t have a fever since fever is a contraindication to giving many vaccines?
Will they know if a child has had a serious or a life-threatening reaction to any vaccine given in the past that would then make them unable to receive future vaccinations?
If the child has a serious reaction after leaving the pharmacy, they will not return to the pharmacy to seek treatment, they will go to their doctor - this bill undermines continuity of care.
HB471 removes some basic standards of medical care and does not consider the very real risks associated with vaccination by allowing pharmacists, pharmacy techs, and pharmacy interns to administer flu vaccinations to children as young as seven. You can read the entire bill here.
Most pharmacies are not equipped to treat life-threatening reactions like anaphylaxis
Pharmacists do not have a family or medical history for the patient
Removes medical care away from family physician to corner drug store
